After we’d walked along the Long Mynd in the morning, a complete contrast to the valleys of the previous day, all moorland and huge horizons, we were off to Stokesay Castle. It’s is a wonderfully domestic castle, built at the end of the thirteenth century – the rooms are small, and it’s easy to visualise people in them doing the things that people do (or did). The gatehouse has lovely wooden carvings all round, including this splendid lady who is being snuggled up to from the side by a naked man. The knocker is rather elegant, too.
