Hannah organised a visit to the print room at the Ashmolean in Oxford – primarily so that Gwyneth could see their Samuel Palmer drawings, but also because Hannah had discovered that they held a wood engraving done by Gwyneth as a student which had gained her admission to the Society of Painter Etchers and Engravers. This (photograph) wasn’t her reaction – she said she thought it was a rather awful engraving – but the visit was a great success. The Samuel Palmers are extraordinary – a very odd technique involving building up layers of gum arabic so they are shiny and slightly three dimensional.
