The rubber foot on Robin’s stick wore through on our first evening in Istanbul, so a replacement was rather urgently required. The local pharmacy thought hard and sent us up the hill to the German Hospital, next door to which was an orthopaedic supplies shop through whose murky windows could be glimpsed crutches of many breeds. After the proprietor had been woken by various neighbours he produced a perfect new (and superior) ferrule – so we bought two.
