This was the much-postponed trip for Marion’s birthday, and we finally made it to Littlehampton, and the Thomas Heatherwick-designed cafe. The food was really terrific, but the architecture? The most interesting side of the building faces the carpark, and is in shadow all the time, as it faces north. It’s big.

The beach is blessed with the wavy roof profile and blue shutters and glass windows. It’s an odd thing to do. Asked how the building works, our waitress said they love it, because it’s so different, but ‘it’s not very practical for storage and things’. And in the loos there’s no wall space for the Dyson hand-dryer – it’s so high that you have to have your hands above your head to get them in, with the water running down your sleeves. But the food really is great…
