The Portland Stone quarries had a network of railways and transports systems, all now gone. But lots of them are still visible, and we walked from the house down the Merchants’ Incline, a steep slope paved with stone down which counter-balanced trucks carried stone to the harbour at the bottom. And then we followed the old railway across the causeway and round to Weymouth, a lovely walk, and took the bus back.
Out on the bus to the Crab House Cafe in the evening – oysters and scallops. Perfect.
