classic walk

Exploits in Istanbul 5.2

We decided that it sounded a good project to walk the land wall. It was built in the 5th century – 6.5 kilometres of stone walls and towers, separating the old city from the land behind. Virtually all of it still stands, quite high, but in a pretty dreadful state in places apart from bits which have been controversially restored. In fact it was a long slog, through one or two interesting areas with almost favela-type housing, but more often on dual carriageway or through derelict plots of land. And although we were incredibly lucky with a ferry connection across the Horn to the Industrial Museum, that turned out to be a bit of a disappointment, too. Rich man’s hobby. But good to have done both.
