Crossing the wobbly bridge after seeing Mira Schendel at Tate Modern with Jane H (a lovely show, and far more interesting that the publicity had promised) found this treat… Ben Wilson, aka chewing gum man, paints the blobs of chewing gum stuck to the bridge walkway.
Arrested and charged with damaging public property, he won his case because he doesn’t – the chewing gum is already there.
He’s working on a trail, improving all the gum from the Tate side of the bridge to the St Paul’s end and has nearly finished. He has done it before, but the cleaners were sent in to chip everything off, so he started again.
It’s brilliant getting your eye accustomed to the scale – you suddenly spot them everywhere.
I am sort of feeling that I have wasted my life; am trying not to think of all the chewing gum that I have carelessly AND needlessly stepped on over the years. I am only just coming to terms with 3D printing and now this. Who would have thought….?
